Sleeping Out Under the Stars and the Hubble Ultra Deep Field

September 2nd, 2009

I had a chance to sleep out under the stars in Southern Utah a few weeks ago. It was amazing. All our nights should be spent out under the stars.

I tried to tell a few fellow sleepers about the Hubble Ultra Deep Field image that hangs in the Smithsonian National Air And Space Museum but forget some of the cool facts.

This video explains it better than I ever could. Move to the end for some truly mind-blowing stuff.

    Yes. Wasn’t it romantic?

    Me. You. Rob. Michelle. Annie.

    Sigh.

    I like thinking about this stuff. One thing that always makes me wonder: If the universe is so incomprehensibly huge, how did we end up on what, according to some accounts, is the most important planet of all, the one where Christ came? In light of the scales mentioned, it seems like a cosmic coincidence of all too convenient proportions (typical of our knack for seeing ourselves in the center of everything). I’m willing to go with it, but am still waiting, anticipating, for a fuller understanding of how this all worked out, and what our geographical and genealogical relationship is to our God in light of his geographical and genealogical relationships to the the other inhabitants in this . . . stunning immensity of space.

    I was so sorry I missed seeing you guys in UT! I guess you left on Saturday morning, and we (me and my parents) got in at about 12:30 AM on Saturday morning. Sad…

    Golfing and sleeping under the stars in one day with the cousins. That’s what we call a great day.
    Hooray for the Hubble.

    That was so cool. I cann’t belive that we pointed the Hubble at nothing and then there was some 3 billion glaxies out there, and yet we had no clue about them! It was like they were just waiting to be discovered or something. That is so mind-blowing though if you really think about it. I mean 10 billion stars in each glaxie and there are about 3 billion glaxies! Totally mind-blowing.

    @joe
    @Joe my thoughts exactly, here man thinks he is the center of everything. We think so highly of ourselves that some of us believe out of the entire universe we are the only ones, I mean we have barely touched the surface… If God created this earth why did he put humans of all creatures on it… I’m sure he knew what he was doing :’D

    In Our image, in Our likeness, this universe is lonely, I want family, not created beings that are not like Me. I want those that are like Me, that love Me, and demonstrate so by their own will, that love and grace are at the core of their being, who they are. That they will do as their Father did, giving Himself up, for them, because they see Eternity, they see the heavens, they are taken in heart by the awesome wonder of the creation and ascribe it to,The Creator.

    Only pilgrims passing through, we are like scuba divers immersed in protective gear, our earth-suits allowing our exploration for a season. Isolated by our gear to this realm, our metal is tested, our ratings are licensed, we deepen our spectrum of understanding, a universe awaits, it’s navigation secure in the grace and love we long for here, where both are learned, applied and treasured, our license, our credentials, our passport to the stars created as an illumination, an introduction to a Father, Who longs to be loved freely by those learned and like…Him

    @Dylan

    we were never important. the earth doesn’t matter, everything it’s a coincidence that in the vastness and complexity of space just had to happen. As it certainly happened many times before the existence of the earth and most certainly will happen in the future. We are not chosen, there is no god, nothing magic happened.

    We are but mere fragments of universal history.

    When you reach the ad for DeepAstronamy.com you are at the end of the universe. You may want to turn back, especially if you need to find a restroom.
